I have a 72″ wide opening and want to install a new exterior door. I want to join two 36″ doors(only one will open). It will cut my cost by quite a bit.

Yeah sure you can. However I would remove the brick case trim that comes with the doors if you do have that. And screw the two door frames together where they meet.

actually the 36″ are outside width in the frames. I could also go with 34″ and 2″ on each side, with a metal covering. The question is, is it OK to join 2 doors (in frames). Only one would open.

72″ isn’t enough room. each door is 36″ without the door frames.
